THE FOOD INDUSTRY, STRATEGIC RECOVERY FOR THE SPANISH ECONOMY

The Strategic Framework "Alimentamos el Futuro", recently introduced by FIAB and the Government of Spain, aims to place the food sector at the forefront of the establishment of the Spanish employment and economic recovery.

In words of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, "the Spanish food sector is a pillar of economic recovery and shall spearhead of the national economy in the coming years." So, the month of March 2014 has seen the light the Strategic Framework Report "Alimentamos el Futuro. 2020 "promoted by the Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB), whose main objective is to create 60,000 jobs in six years and increase the sector's net sales by 4% year-sustainable. This is a pioneering model of public-private partnership between industry and the Ministries of Agriculture, Health and Industry, with the support of strategic partners such as the Bank of Santander, Telefónica, Iberdrola and Indra.

Despite its unquestionable importance in the whole national economy, the food industry has gone through, virtually alone, very hard times almost from the beginnings of industrial restructuring in the early 80s and policy adjustments to the demands of the European Union in the 90s. This latest crisis, however, is helping to modernize and increase the competitiveness of our companies, adapting to a globalized market in which the internationalization of supply is imposed on local demand in recession.

Initiatives like this of FIAB, very appropriately supported by the Government, come to give value and encourage a sector which today represents the first Spanish industry, with 10% of the overall GDP of Spain and 20% of industrial GDP. 30,000 companies employing 500,000 workers (17% of industrial employment), with a net sales volume of just over 90,000 million euros, of which about 22,000 million are exports.

The Spanish food industry leads the European Union in areas such as traceability, food safety and quality, in addition to its high level of investment in R & D and technology transformation, locating economically fourth billing in Europe and eighth worldwide. The Framework program promoted by FIAB, born under the slogan "Alimentamos el Futuro", is produced by a very suitable both for the sector, given its strategic position and its strength as a generator of value, directly involved in building and strengthening time international of "Brand Spain".

The four strategies that have been identified to achieve the objectives of the Framework Programme are: Efficiency, Value Creation, Internationalization and Revitalization to gain size, with six key levers dynamization. These levers contemplated: an efficient and streamlined regulation, allowing communication to value a leading sector, increasing training and the pursuit of excellence and talent, promote a stable framework of strategic alliances and partnerships, promote the development of innovation, science and technology industry and promote alternative, sustainable and diverse economical funding.

Thus, with 2020 as the target, the food industry and lays the foundation for a project that seeks to improve the quality of life of citizens building a safe, healthy and sustainable economic, social and environmentally industry.

It is therefore a task that must involve all companies and food operators. The objectives, although they are ambitious (remember: growth of 4% year 60,000 jobs and 115,000 million euros in turnover in 2020), are perfectly plausible in an industry like ours, they used to meet and exceed few challenges needed.
